Coinciding with the launch of the extensive afforestation and tree-planting campaign organized by the University of Basra in cooperation with the Basra Governorate Council under the slogan "Basra's Breath," the College of Marine Sciences at the University of Basra made a distinguished and active contribution to this important environmental and strategic event. The campaign aims to increase green spaces, mitigate the effects of climate change and desertification, and improve the environmental situation in the governorate.
The campaign witnessed high-level participation from the college administration, represented by its Dean, Dr. Osama Qasim Khalifa, and his deputies for scientific and administrative affairs, Dr. Nawras Abdul Ghani Abdul Zahra and Abdul Hussein Hatem Ghazi, underscoring the college's leading role in supporting environmental and community initiatives.
The heads of departments were also present at the campaign site, along with a select group of faculty members, staff, and students who contributed outstanding volunteer efforts in planting seedlings and perennial trees and organizing the planting sites.
The Dean of the College of Marine Sciences, Dr. Osama Qasim Khalifa, affirmed that this broad participation aligns with the University of Basra's strategic plan and the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research aimed at activating the role of universities in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that the college is keen to be at the forefront of colleges contributing to the success of the "Basra Breath" campaign, given its importance in improving air quality and combating desertification.
The initiative focused on planting diverse tree varieties resistant to harsh climatic conditions, high temperatures, and salinity, which are well-suited to the climate of Basra Governorate. In addition, awareness workshops were held to address the importance of afforestation, scientific methods of plant care, and guidelines for conserving and rationalizing water consumption, all of which contribute to the environmental and aesthetic well-being of the university and the city of Basra.
