The Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Marine Sciences, University of Basra, in cooperation with the Human Rights Unit, the Legal Division, the Human Resources Division, the Media Unit, and the Student Activities Department, organized a scientific seminar entitled "The Social Stigma of Drug Addicts and its Impact on Social Integration" on Thursday, November 20, 2025, in the conference hall. The seminar addressed the issue of social stigma faced by recovering addicts, who are often viewed negatively by society even after completing treatment, negatively impacting their psychological and social well-being.
The lecture, delivered by legal expert Bassam Muftin Al-Lami, focused on the experiences of recovering addicts, noting that stigma leads to their marginalization and increases the rate of relapse due to their lack of acceptance in society.
The seminar aimed to raise awareness about the importance of integrating recovering addicts into society by educating the public and providing them with educational, employment, and housing opportunities, thus helping them overcome the negative effects of stigma. This seminar provided an opportunity to promote dialogue on how to provide support to recovering addicts, contributing to building a more inclusive and understanding society for the recovering addicts category.
