Panel discussion on the study of nutrient concentrations in the Shatt al-Arab

The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Marine Sciences, in collaboration with the Center for Development and Continuing Education at the University of Basrah, held a seminar titled "Studying Nutrient Concentrations in Sediments and Water in the Southern Part of the Shatt al-Arab and the Northwestern Arabian Gulf" on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

The seminar addressed the importance of studying nutrient concentrations and their impact on the marine environment. Research results were presented, highlighting nutrient levels and their variations across locations and seasons.

The study aimed to analyze nutrients in the water and sediments of the Shatt al-Arab River and the Arabian Gulf to determine their levels and variations across locations and seasons. Nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus are essential elements that influence biological productivity and aquatic environmental quality. Samples were collected from several stations to analyze concentrations and the factors affecting them.

This study helps identify nutrient sources and understand their environmental impacts, contributing to water quality assessment and establishing the foundations for sustainable environmental management in the region.

At the conclusion of the seminar, several department professors and graduate students contributed by raising questions and making scientific observations that enriched the topic and the discussion.
