A scientific trip for students of the fourth stage of the College of Marine Sciences to the mangrove reserve in Khor Al-Zubair to complete the graduation project: The positive and negative environmental impacts of mangrove planting on the Iraqi coast.
Accompanied by the supervisor, Prof. Imad Jassim Al-Shawi, and the project manager, Prof. Prof. Dr. Ayman Al-Rubaie from the Marine Sciences Center
The trip included taking samples of sediments and water from mangrove growing areas and measuring a group of environmental factors. The species to be cultivated was identified and classified. Dr. Ayman Al-Rubaie gave a full explanation of the importance of cultivating this type of plant on the Iraqi coast and its role in reducing the environmental effects of climate change by withdrawing quantities. A large amount of carbon dioxide and the release of oxygen gas, as well as the role of these plants in preserving and stabilizing the coasts, preventing them from erosion and nutrient accumulation, and reducing water turbidity, in addition to providing environmental conditions suitable for the presence of many living organisms such as birds, amphibians, reptiles and invertebrates.
