On Thursday 22th December 2022, the Department of Natural Marine Sciences in the College of Marine Science, University of Basrah held a seminar on “Marine Biotechnology Applications”.
The seminar was presented by Prof. Dr. Nawras Abdel-Ghani Al-Faez, Head of the Department of Natural Marine Sciences.
He introduced a definition of biotechnology and its most important types, as well as the areas of application of this technology in the fields of marine sciences. Also, he clarified its application in the cultivation of marine organisms, the improvement of these activities through growth, genetic improvement and reproduction, and resistance to environmental factors with focus on cultivation, as well as its use in the field of marine herbs and its exploitation in the nutritional and medical aspects. 
The workshop also dealt with the use of this technology in the fields of nutrition, pharmacy and biological treatments by extracting useful materials from seaweed and life.
The seminar was attended by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hamed Talib Al-Saad, the lecturers of the Department of Natural Marine Sciences and a number of college students.
