A workshop on coastal resource management

Under the auspices of the respected President of the University of Basra and the respected Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences, and under the supervision of the Head of the Applied Marine Sciences Department, and in coordination with the Continuing Education Unit, a workshop entitled “Coastal Resources Management” was organized and presented by Prof. Wesal Fakhri Hassan and Prof. Dunia Khairallah Khasaf, the two teachers in the Department of Applied Marine Sciences / College of Marine Sciences, with the participation of Dr. Jassim Hussein Abdullah Al-Maliki from the Directorate of Agriculture of Basra. The workshop included three axes, focusing on the first axis presented by Prof. Wessal Fakhri evaluated heavy metal pollution by using mathematical evidence to estimate the amount of pollution. As for the second axis, which was presented by Prof. Dr. Donia Khairallah was about evaluating the suitability of the Iraqi coast to grow mangrove trees according to the determination of the physical and chemical characteristics of the Iraqi sea coast region, and the teacher concluded that the tidal flats are suitable for growing these trees despite their high salinity and sodium, and recommended the cultivation of salinity-tolerant varieties. Jassim Hussein, through which he dealt with the Iraqi coastal resources and how to manage them properly and promote them as an important economic resource that can be relied upon and developed through the relentless and continuous endeavor to exploit every resource available to serve the public interest. The workshop took place on Monday, December 12, 2022.
